Cummings is one of only two Ace pilots to shoot down two Me 262 jets during a single mission! Donald Cummings flew the P-51 (44-15192), which he called "
My Kitten
", when he was assigned to the 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, 8th USAAF. He has 6.57 air-to-air victories. On February 25th, 1945, he shot down two Me 262 jets.
Joining the USAAF in 1941, Don Cummings saw action in England, Africa and Italy, taking part in the Battle of Anzio. Flying first with the 12th Air Force and then posted to the 8th Air Force in England, flying with the 39th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group out of Wormingford. Don Cummings flew a total of 150 combat missions and on 25th February, 1945, became one of only two fighter Aces to shoot down two Me262 jet fighters on a single mission. He then served in occupied Germany after the war ended.

During World War II, Donald Cummings became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 6.5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, and retired in 1964 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

The skillful and zealous manner in which he has sought out the enemy and destroyed him, his devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
