Antique Chinese Elm & Rosewood w Bone Inlay Wardrobe Wedding Cabinet
This is a very unusual antique Chinese wardrobe cabinet. Based on the style we feel this piece is originally from Ningbo. Typical of the pieces from Ningbo, this piece has intricate inlays that create beautiful patterns. The inlay is most likely bone. What really makes this piece special is the contrasting woods. The basic cabinet is most likely elm, with 2 large doors. The door frames are the same wood as the cabinet, and darker wood in the door panels. The darker wood appears to be rosewood, although we are not 100% certain. Whether or not it is rosewood, it make a great background for the lighter inlay. There is also a fine lighter wood string inlay that borders the panel. The doors swing on round wood pivots that are held in place with beautifully carved projections.
The top of the cabinet has a carved front edge with a recessed waist below that also has fancy inlays.
Inside the cabinet is a hanging shelf with 2 drawers under the shelf.
Below the doors are 3 raised panels. The bottom shelf in the cabinet is removable, which exposes a hidden compartment that is behind the 3 panels.
There is some wear typical with age. As can be seen in the photos, some of the string inlays are missing. Also, as seen, there is slight warping in the doors so they do not completely align vertically. There are some shrinkage cracks on the back. There is a lock but there is no key.
