1944 Press Photo James Johnson & Joseph Wittich save U.S. ship from German shell
This is an original press photo. Heroes of the "Lucky Lud" -- Cool thinking and quick reactions on the part of Chief Gunner's Mate James Drexel Johnson, USN (left) of College Point, New York, and Joseph Matthew Wittich, carpenter's mate first class (then second class) of Jamaica, New York, saved the destroyer USS Ludlow from serious damage -- and many of their shipmates from death or injury. When a German six-inch shell hit the destroyer off Anzio on February 8, 1944, Chief Johnson calmly picked up the dud, and with Wittich assisting him by …. and clearing the way, rushed it topsides and tossed it overboard. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 11-07-1944.
