Hanfstaengl (L), son of exiled Ernst (Putzi) Hanfstaengl, former German foreign press chief and former friend of Adolf Hitler, is shown joining the Army at Cambridge, Mass., as he takes the oath from Lt. John Ryan, Jr. A Harvard sophomore, young Hanfstaengl said he was leaving school because this is an age not of scholars, books and professors but an age of violence and soldiers. Feb. 3 1941.
